I am about to buy my wife a new (desktop) computer that has Vista
pre-loaded. My computer is running XP and I would like to put XP on the new
one. Is there any reason I can't do a clean install of XP on the new
machine? I have a Windows XP CD available.

Thanks for any help,

As long as you have XP drivers for the new machine's hardware, you'll be
fine. Check on the computer mftr.'s tech support site. You might want to
play with Vista a while first to see if you like it though. You might be
pleasantly surprised. Or not. ;-) I'm not trying to convince you either
way, just making the suggestions.

Are you SURE you wouldn't rather run Vista? If you can't afford a monster
computer, get one with Home Basic. But if you insist on XP, computers loaded
with XP are often for sale at a discount. Shop around, and you ought to be
able to find a bargain somewhere.

By the way, if your XP disc has been used on another computer, you might
have to buy a new one.

1. Your available XP CD has to also include a product key that is not
in use on any other computer. Otherwise you are not going to be able
to validate the Windows XP on the new computer.

2. By changing to a different operating system you might be
invalidating the warranty on the new computer. Check the find print
in the warranty information and/or the manufacturer's web site.

3. The pre-loaded Vista, which you paid for as part of the price of
the new computer, cannot be used on any other computer. Period.

Good luck

If you are buying from some companies, you can still order
XP Pro, but VISTA will do fine.
