Changing picture name

If I want to save a picture from a website and I just hit "Save Picture As" and hit enter I am fine. If I change the name of the picture . . it still says the type is .jpg and I hit save. But when I go to look a the saved picture it is no longer type .jpg. This has only happened since I installed a new hard drive and reinstalled Windows on Thursday. Any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated! thank you! Don
 
It just saves it as a file. That's what Windows Explorer says when I look up the pic.
 
Files have extension.
What is the extension?
Ensure you have extensions showing in Explorer.
