Changing partition size

I dual-boot installed Vista to a system which had XP on C:, my data/programs
on D:, and an empty E: (all on the same disk). I was trying to do an
update/repair on E: and it says it needs about 7GB free and I only have 3GB.
So I tried to use Partition Magic 8 to resize. I booted from the PM CD and
tried to do the operations. But it says that the 'E:' partition is 20GB in
size and all used. And it won't let me resize or move it, even if I make
space for it available in front of it. Any idea how I can resize a Vista
partition?

Evidently PM8 is not yet Vista-ready. Acronis Disk Director only became
Vista-ready a month ago. But, in any case, you can use the Vista Disk
Manager to resize a non-system partition like your E: This is a new
feature in Vista.

Do it using BootIt http://www.terabyteunlimited.com (do not install it
on hdd).

Actually, my E: drive is a system partition; C: is the XP OS, D: is my data,
and E: is the Vista OS. The only way I could give space to E: is to take it
from D: but my understanding of the Vista Disk Manager is that it can only
grow into space that's after the partition. It would need to be able to move
the partition up into the free space after D: and then grow and I don't
believe it can do that.

Well, Acronis Disk Director (build 2160 *only*) is able to do what you
want, and I recommend it highly. There are also other third-party apps
you might consider, but that is how *I* would do it.
