Changing order of columns in Stacked chart

Hi All!!!

A fairly new user to ppt hopefully has an easy question... I have the
following type of data:

Period 2 Period 1
Data 1 325 600
Data 2 -140 800
Total 185 1400

when I enter this into a powerpoint data table for a stacked chart, I
end up having the data for period one being in a different order to
the data for period 2, ie
800
325 600
-140

What I would like to have is

325 600
-140 800

in chart form, so that it's possible to compare like with like. So
both sets of data 1 next to each other, and the same for data 2,
currently it works for data 1, but not for data 2.

I spent quite a while trying to figure it out, using help and
obviously google, but didn't get much luck. Can anyone suggest where
I'm going wrong?

Cheers in advance!

OK, if I understand you correctly, and if you're using PowerPoint 2003, with
the chart activated, click the By Column button on the toolbar (next to the
By Row button). This switches around the data and you'll get a chart that
shows 300 and 600 for Data 1 and then -140 and 800 for Data 2. Is this what
you mean?

I see what is happening, and I understand what you want, but I don't know
how to get there elegantly.

Brute force is to swap the Period 1 data so it looks like this:

Period 2 Period 1
Data 1 325 800
Data 2 -140 600

Then change the colors on the two data points on the Period 1 column. (To
change a data point color click once to select the data series, then click
again to select the individual data point. Then right-click and choose
"format data point.")

It's ugly, but it will do the trick.

Hi,

In Excel this is relatively straight forward, for you data example. Select
one of the series and on the Series Order tab swap the plot order.

In MSGraph it is more difficult as there is no plot order property.
You could add a third series, which is formatted the same as 1st series.
And then move the Period 2 data down.

Period 1 Period 2
Data 1 325 <blank>
Data 2 -140 800
Data 1a <blank> 600

You can select the 'Data 1a' legend entry and delete it in order to keep the
legend tidy.

Hi Echo

cheers for the feedback, I appreciate you taking the time to answer! I
think I'm going to try Andy's approach as it appears quite
straightforward!

I figured out a way round my initial prob, basically if I switch "Data
1" and "Data 2" around, it seemed to work fine for me, and you're then
comparing like with like as it were!

thanks

Pete

thanks for the response andy, it's actually quite straightforward,
looking forward to trying it out tomorrow!!! My fix was a bit of a
cheat really, but all good!

thanks again!
