Hi i have a system with dual-boot Win98SE and Win2K SP3.

I have the GA-7VRXP motherboard which i am swapping for a GA-7DXE. Will i
need to do a completely new Windows installation and reformat my hard
disks - or can i simply plug in my hardware and hard drives and expect it to
swim ??

I would prefer not to have to do a new installation - but if completely
necessary i will.

Thanks
AL

Greetings --

Normally, unless the new motherboard is virtually identical to the
old one (same chipset, IDE controllers, etc), you'll most likely need
to perform a repair (a.k.a. in-place upgrade) installation, at the
very least (and don't forget to reinstall any service packs and
subsequent hot fixes):

As Ray and Bruce mentioned, you are highly likely to get an
"Inaccessible Boot Device" error if you change your motherboards
without preparation.

I have had pretty good success (and some failures) when I did
this: Replace the specific Master Disk Controller driver with the
generic Microsoft driver. You must do this while your disk runs
with the old motherboard.

"Upgrade" your present installation.
WIth your current installation in place, boot with your Win2000 CD.

Chose to upgrade your current installation.
Follow the prompts.

When your machine reboots, turn it off.

Change your hardware.

Windows will redetect your hardware and build an appropriate HAL.

Within 20 to 50 minutes, your computer will be back to normal with all your
software and GUI modifications in place.

Good luck. Be sure to backup everything before you start.

Boot with your Win2000 CD
