I want to upgrade my motherboard and processor, while
using existing hard drive with xp and data still intact.
Is this possible without having to do a new install

There are 2 options, you can do a repair install after you do the upgrade, this will basically do a reload without deleting your
data. The second option is faster but you need a Promise PCI IDE add on card (or similar) to do it, let me know if you have one to
use.

Do a repair install:

Start the operating system from the CD-ROM (you may have to set your BIOS to
have the CD drive as the first boot device)

When the computer starts from the CD, the system checks your hardware

and then prompts you to select one of the following options:

To set up Windows XP now, press ENTER.

To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.

To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.

Press ENTER.

Press F8 to accept the Licensing Agreement.

A box lists your current Windows XP installation, and then the system

prompts you to select one of the following options:

To repair the selected Windows XP installation, press R.

To continue installing a fresh copy of Windows XP without repairing, press
ESC.

Press R to start the automatic repair process. After repairing Windows XP,

you will need re-download all updates, starting with SP1.

No I don't have pci ide card so will have to do the
repair route. Thank you for replying!

One thing I forgot to mention was, it has a lan card ,
and new board has onboard lan. will it rpair that also.
do I need to rmove befor I install?
Thanks,
Cliff

You might as well leave the NIC in place, it is in the hardware hash code. If you do remove it, there will be a device (the old NIC) listed in the hardware section of system properties that you will not be able to remove. The system will not let you delete it because it might be needed for bootup! I was only able to delete it (on my system) by reinstalling XP.

Just my 2¢ worth

__________in response to__________
| Use the onboard NIC, no need to install the one from your old board.

| Replace "mail" with "36db"

Get rid of the PCI NIC and use the onboard one, just install the driver from the motherboard driver CD after you do the repair
install.

probably not. I did this and I had to call microsoft to
get another number over the phone. There was so much
change that it triggered a check and a new number. It was
no big deal, but it is a hassle.
