Changing Monitor

How do I change the monitor? Currently it is set as Generic PNP Monitor or
something like that. I have an old CRT Monitor that I assume is not PNP. In
XP and before, I was able to specify what the monitor is so Windows would
know what the monitor is capable of. How do I do that in Vista?

AFAIK all CRT monitors will operate as generic PNP monitors.
Are you able to specify the resolution you want for your desktop with the
PNP driver? If no what is it that the PNP driver does support.

The problem is that the monitor shakes and flickers. The shaking is minor
but noticeable and the flickering happens only occasionally. When I say
occasinally, I mean that it depends on the window; it happens in some
situations and always in the same situation but those conditions are
occasional. The help information indicates that the likely cause of
flickering is that the refresh rate is too low. I am using the highest
refresh rate offered by Vista, so I thought I would attempt to use something
not available for the generic monitor.

When I uncheck the box for showing just available modes, and then select a
higher refresh rate, then the monitor goes blank and then shows a cryptic
message that I assume means it is not working. So perhaps it is not a matter
of setting a different mode.

I wanted to first eliminate the possibility that it was an incorrect setting
such as refresh rate. Probably it is not. If it is not, then I should
request assistance elsewhere or at least create a new thread here. Thank you
for your help.

Thank you, I tried all that. In other words, I tried to use the list of all
drivers. I did try, but obviously not enough. Now when I try, I do get a
list of Viewsonic monitors, which I did not get previously. My monitor is a
Viewsonic, but my monitor is not in the list. So I will check in the
Viewsonic web site. You did help by suggesting that I use the update driver
tab for the monitor, but I should have tried that.

Use the show all modes to pick the resolution and refresh rate you want.
What make/model graphics card do you have and what driver release for it are
you using?
What resolution and refresh rate are you trying to use and are you sure the
monitor will support it?

Yes, but I am totally capable of recognizing that (the monitor is old)
myself and you do not need to say that in that manner.

Apparently the shaking is the result of a fan I had plugged into the same
surge suppressor strip. When the fan is off, the shaking goes away.

The flashing is the result of a bug in a specific application, although the
bug appears to be dependent on Vista. See:
http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1751682&group_id=69252&atid=523907

I do not see the flashing problem elsewhere.
