Changing IE's default editor for 'View Source' menu item

Hi there,

Can anyone tell me how to change the editor that is used for View Source?

I've tried changing all of the editors on the Tools|Options|Programs tab, as
well as the default Open With... program for .txt files on my machine, and
IE still opens Notepad.exe when I choose to View Source.

Any ideas?

This does not do it. This registry entry is the same as the Default HTML
editor in IE's Tools|Options|Programs tab.

Any other suggestions? Many thanks!

For a drastic type suggestion, you could temporarily rename Notepad and
then try to go view the source of some web page and see if IE (being
unable to find notepad) would offer you an option to select another
viewer.

No, I haven't tried it, but if you do, let us know what the result was!

No lock. Excellent suggestion though. This produces a mesage box generated
by Windows that says notepad cannot be located. The message shown when I
choose View Source is the same as the one shows when I go to Start | Run and
enter notepad, after having deleted all instances of notepad. So that tells
me that IE is shelling out to Windows, as expected. The question is what is
telling IE that Notepad is what it should be using.

I guess I'll start fiddling on a test machine and replacing all instances of
notepad.exe in the registry with a different text editor until I find the
magic registry entry (which I'll report here, of course).

If anyone has any more good ideas, please chime in.

A little searching on Google, and voila!

To change your View Source Editor in IE, add the following key to your
registry:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\View Source
Editor\Editor Name]
@="c:\\windows\\wordpad.exe"
