My OS is XP Pro, and I have IE and FireFox installed. I have two profiles,
and I want to use IE for one and FireFox for the other as a default, however,
everytime I log into either account, it keeps asking me if I want to make one
a default.

How can I change the settings in XP to use IE as default for one profile and
FireFox as default for the other?

You can't. It's a global setting (in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT).
To be exact:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\HTTP\Shell\open\command

Surely, or a VBS. But involves great deal of testing, with different kinds
of browsers out there.

Mostly the [HKCR\InternetShortcut] and
[HKCR\CLSID\{FBF23B40-E3F0-101B-8488-00AA003E56F8}] caused problems when the
per-user override was done.
