I bought and loaded Windows XP Pro on my 30GB HD 6 mths ago, I now wish to replace it with a 200GB HD so I have more room for video editing.
Can I transfer or re-load my Windows XP Pro onto this new HD and if so how do I do it ?

Hi Doove,

If you plan on moving to a new hard drive, you would need to Ghost or Image
your existing information to your new hard drive.
The "catch" with XP and even 2000 is if you change out hardware, Windows may
refuse to boot completely. With 95/98/Me,
there was no problem swapping hard drives from machine to machine because
Windows didn't care.

Once you get the contents to the new drive, you will need to have your
Windows installer CD ready so you can do the repair on it.
Even though nothing is wrong with your Windows, you need to repair it
because of the new HDD.

Many hard drive manufacturers supply drive copy software. You may have to
visit the manufacturer's site to download it. Or you can use a third party
app like Norton Ghost or Powerquest's Drive Copy. Simply connect the new
drive on the Primary Controller jumpered as Master replacing the old drive.
Next change the jumper on the old drive to Slave and connect it to the same
controller cable. Boot the computer with the Disk Copy floppy and copy the
old drive to the new drive. DONOT copy the new drive to the old as it will
overwrite the old drive and blank it out. there should be no need to run a
Repair Install as this is a simple hardware change of one item and nothing
special about that.

Hi Duc Luu,
As for Ghosting or imaging do you mean installing the new HD as a secondary drive and transferring the contents of the old HD to the new HD.
Then re-booting the system on the new HD with the XP installer cd in the cd drive and letting it do a repair ?

To go to a hard drive of the size you mentioned also requires your
motherboard's BIOS to support drives larger than 137Gb, XP SP1 must be
installed, and 48-bit LBA must be turned on.

I see no reason to run a Repair Install after the drive contents are
transferred. That would only be necessary if you were making significant
changes to hardware like swapping out a motherboard or if you moved hard
drives to another system or possibly if you changed HD types from IDE to
SCSI perhaps. A simple change of HDs should not even trigger Windows Product
Activation either.

Doove,
I wouldn't replace the 'C' drive if I were you. I'd install a new drive
('D') just for video files.
