Just added a new router and changed T1 providers. When I
update my DNS server to the new gateway address (router),
the server will no longer can reslove names outside. The
root hint list is still in place, any idea as to what's
happening? If I change the gateway back to the original
setting everything works fine..

Thats funny. I have the same problem. If you figure it out
please let me know.

thanks,

Chris

What are you using for a forwarder, if any?
Are you still using the old router as a forwarder?
Did you try using the new router as a forwarder?
The first thing that comes to mind is there is a rule in place on the new
router that prevents pass through of port 53 to outside DNS servers. In
which case would be that it would not even be able to contact the root
servers.

In addition to Kevin's suggestions/questions, you may want to check with
your provider to see if the line was "turned up" yet. Also, did you
configure/provision your router and CSU/DSU settings properly for the new
line? Call the new provider, they'll help you out with this (it's free).

It sounds like either the new link isn't up or that there is some filtering taking place blocking DNS traffic. From a command prompt on the DNS server, run
"nslookup" and press enter. It should state the default server is pointing at itself. Next type "server IP" where IP is the address of you ISP's DNS server, again
press enter. Query for and Internet name. Does this work? If not, something is blocking DNS to the ISP.

Post an IPCONFIG /all to this thread if the problem persists.
