Robert Raley

We have just bought a machine and it has window XP. We have tried to change
to windows 2000 but get a message saying that we can not as the xp is a
newer version.

Question. How do I update to 2k when have xp. We do not like xp. Slow and
ugly but just our opinions.

Thanks

YOu can't "upgrade". YOu have to do a fresh installation, and if you
do this without backup up your data and formatting the drive you have
a complete mess. You also have to reinstall all your applications.

w2k is a fine system, but XP is OK, esp. if it's already paid for.
You can set it to "classic" mode, and shut lots of unnecessary stuff
off;

The following services can be turned off;

Automatic Updates
Messenger Service
TCP/IP Netbios Helper
Wireless Zero Config (unless have a WiFI adapter in the machine)
Upload Manager
Task Scheduler Server
Error Reporting
Remote Registery
Server Service
Computer Browser

Turn off some of the GUI crap;

Start->Properties Select "classsic" IMHO

Start -> Control Panel > System -> Advanced
-> Performance -> Settings

Select "adjust for best performance"

Boot with the Win2k CD.
Delete the existing partition.
Install a clean Win2k.

Cannot upgrade from a later version - WinXP is NT 5.1 and Win2000 is NT 5.0.
You must delete the partition, reformat and reinstall using a *full*
installation disk, not an upgrade, since a Win2000 upgrade disk will not
recognize WinXP.
