I want to change from XP Professional to XP Home. Can I
just install Home over Professional?

Since this would be a downgrade rather than an upgrade, you can't just
install on top - you would need to do a clean install. However, since XP Pro
is a superset of XP Home (it has everything Home has, and more) why would
you want to do this?

No, you cannot simply install XP Home over XP Pro.

An upgrade to XP Pro is a one-way ticket with no uninstall option.
Backup your important files and documents to a CD, then perform a
"clean install" of XP Home:

The Windows XP CD is bootable and contains all the tools necessary
to partition and format your drive. Follow this procedure and allow
Windows XP to partition and format your drive:

NOTE: It would be best to physically disconnect all your peripheral hardware
devices, except for the monitor, mouse and keyboard, before installing XP.

1. Open your BIOS and set your CD Drive as the first bootable device.

2. Insert your Windows XP CD in the CD Drive and reboot your computer.
3. You'll see a message to boot to the CD....follow the instructions.
4. The setup menu will appear and you should elect to delete the existing
Windows partitions, then create a new partition, then format the primary
partition (preferably NTFS) and proceed to install Windows XP.

5. Clean Install Windows XP

6. After Windows XP is installed, visit the Windows Update website
and download the available "Critical Updates".

7. After installing the critical updates, be sure and visit the support website
of the manufacturer of the computer to download and install any
available Windows XP compatible drivers, such as video adapter
and audio drivers.

No you cannot. Unfortunately to go to Home from Pro you
will need to perform a clean install

No. Downgrades aren't supported and the only way to do this is a
clean installation.

Why do you want to do this? Are you aware that Home is just a
subset of Professional; there's nothing in Home that isn't also
in Professional, and you gain nothing by doing this?

Lets just guess its an issue around a cd key ?

Maybe, but I prefer not to guess. I've seen a fair number of
people who wanted to go from XP Professional to Home thinking
that they would achieve something that way--support for a program
that wouldn't run in Professional, easier to use, etc.
