Currently have Office XP (2002) installed. I have Office 2003 and would
like to install it. The 2003 version is not an upgrade but the full
Professional suite.

Should I un-install the old first then install the new?
I don't want both version on my computer. I will export the PST file so
that I save everything... that's not an issue.
Thanks

Hello,

If you only want 2003 installed uninstall OffXP via Control Panel >
Add/Remove Programs. Although any files you created with any one of the
particular apps in Office will be retained, make a backup of them just in
case. Once Off2003 is installed you will have to convert your OffXP files
in order to edit them.

What files have to be converted?
I know Outlook is different.

Does Word & Excel have to be converted?
Thanks

No, not the applications. Any .doc files created with Word, .xls
spreadsheets created with Excel, .mdb database created with Access and so
on will need to be converted. When you first open one after installing
Off2003 it should popup a message giving you the choice to convert the
files created with OffXP to Off2003 or leave them as is. If you don't
convert them they will be read only.

If converted, with Office 2002 (xp version) still be able to open them?
Since that is what is on the other 3-computers at my home.

They should be able to if when saving you use Save As > Save As Type, it
will save it as an .rtf instead of a .doc.

Two other alternatives would be to simply make a copy before you convert
and use the copy on the other machines.
or
Get the 2003 converter pack which is in the Office 2003 Resource Kit:

I think this was included in the Office 2003 Service Pack 2. Not sure
though.
I will look into it. Thanks again.
