Changing format of a document

My son in law just reprogramed my computer. I have several documents I saved but they were created in Microsoft Works. I now have Microsoft Word on my computer and it won't open my documents. Can I somehow change my documents from Works to Word and if so how do I do it?
 
Open Windows Explorer. Go to Tools > Folder options > File types. Find doc
in the list. Click Change. Select Word.
