Greetings ...

I'm getting ready to assemble my new system. On my main hard disk, I'd like
to partition it into at least 2 partitions, with Windows on one and
data/applications on the other.

My question is: Is there an easy way to change the default installation
drive (i.e.: from C: to D:) that's used whenever I install programs? I'd
prefer to not edit the registry, unless it's a last resort.

Any guidance would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Tripod

The default installation volume is stored in each program's install program
individually. The only thing you need to do is be careful when installing
software and don't click "OK" so fast. Make sure you read each prompt
during software installation because one of them will give you the option to
NOT install automatically. That's the one you want to choose. -Dave

Dave is correct, and additionally, each software installation make numerous
registry entries on the OS partition, whose links would be corrupted/missing
if you later wiped out one of the partitions, forcing your to reinstall the
software in either case. If your purpose for installing software to another
non-OS partition would be to be able to back up only one of the partitions,
the software-related data on both partitions would no longer be in synch,
and would make for a big mess of a registry and non-functioning software.
However, if you decide that you only want data created from the software
programs installed on another partition, you could either drag and drop the
"My Documents" folder to another location before installing any software,
and all software installations would point to the new location if they and
you utilize the "My Documents" folder. Otherwise, no really universal way
to instruct all software programs to deposit data in a particular alternate
location. I hope this helps.

Thanks everyone . . . I'll probably end up keeping the programs and OS on
one partition and data on the second to avoid any conflicts.

Thanks again!

Hi,

With TweakUI you can easily change your default Program Files folder etc to
different locations. It is always the very first thing I install and
configure after new system installation. Please notice it just changes the
default paths, it does not move software already installed in those folders.
