Changing file path

I am using Windows xp with sp2.

Whenever I install a software program it is generally installed in
"C:\Program Files\xyz".

I now want to change the location from C drive to D drive.

For new installation I install them in D drive.

But how do I change the location for my old installations?

There is no way to easily and reliably move them so you have to
reinstall them where you want them. Are you running out of available
space on drive C:?

I see. Is D: a separate physical drive or is it a second partition on
the same physical hard disk? How many hard disk have you got in the
machine?

COA2 (Change of Address) is a program that will facilitate the moving of
programs from one hard drive to another.

The program reports it will work with Windows up to 2000 but individual
users say it works fine with Windows XP SP2.

I've also tried COA2. My experience is different from yours, and I
found it considerably less than perfect. I found that it sometimes
found and changed all the needed references, and other times missed
some.

So my preference, by far, is to avoid programs like this, and instead
do it by uninstalling the program, and then reinstalling it wherever
you want it. That *always* works, and is the safer way to do it.

Making the assumption you new drive is larger than your old drive, you could
consider cloning your old drive to the new drive and install the old drive as
a slave.

D: is a second partition and I have only one disk.
What I am now doing is following your suggestion of uninstalling and
reinstalling wherever it is possible.

I think that is the safest and most reliable way of doing this. With
the use of third party tools you could also have increased the size of
the C: partition by "stealing" some space from D:.

I'd make sure I moved all my data to the D: drive first to see if that frees
up some space. That would include your mail files that Outlook Express
uses. These can eat up a lot of space over time.
