changing domain name server

F

frank

Hi,

I have win2000 adv. serv. acting as the primary DC. I would like to change
the name of the server. If I look into the Network Identification tabe of
the system icon, the properties button is grayed out. I looked at the
computer in the active directory tree but I didn't find an option to change
the computer name. What can I do? Thanks.

Hi Frank,

I'm by no means an expert in this subject matter, but I'll try to assist you
to the best of my ability. My understandin is that the only way to change
the name would be to do a DCPromo to demote the DC, change the name, reboot
and do another DCPromo to promote it back to a DC.

Last time I tested this a while back, I believe you would loose Active
Directory. As I said earlier, I'm by no means an expert in this subject
matter.

I would dcpromo another server , move all the fsmo roles to that one.
Demote the server you wanna change name on, reboot, change name, reboot,
Run dcpromo on it. Move back all FSMO roles to it again.

Then you don't loose anything from your Active Directory
