Changing disk from FAT to NTFS

Hi, I purchased an external drive pre formatted; plugged it in & started
using it.
I then realized that I couldn't save backups to it over a certain size
because it was FAT.
I need to convert it to NTFS. When I try to do this in Disk manager, the
option for changing to NTFS is disabled. Is this because there is data on the
disk?
if not, how can I convert it to NTFS?

Secondly, in *experimenting*, I accidently changed the disk to active &
cannot change it back. How can I reverse this & what effects will it have if
I can't?
(It means I'll have two seperate, active disks)

Thanks very much in advance for any ideas on this

convert "drive letter:" /fs:ntfs

As far as I know, once a partition has been made active. The only way with
Microsoft's tools, is to delete the partition and recreate it. Which of
course would destory any information stored in the partition. (Or, the spend
money way. Use Acronis Diskdirector or Partition Magic). But, then again if
you've not set your system to boot from that drive don't worry about it.
