Hi,
I'm using PowerPoint 2010 and I find myself using the program's Insert
Shapes command quite a bit. Is there any way to change the default
for one of these shapes? For example, when I use the Oval tool it
always drags out the oval with a dark purple fill with a black border.
99% of the time I want a red oval with no fill. Can I create a new
default for that tool that will give me the hollow red oval instead of
the filled purple oval? Thanks very much.

You can change the theme colors:

Or you can change the default for all new shapes (oval as well as
rectangle etc.):
Right-click the shape border, and then click "Set as Default Shape".

Perfect, thank you.
One other quick question - If I know that I will be using a tool for
awhile, is there a way to keep it selected?
Thanks again.

you can right click the tool. There you will find a command "Lock
drawing mode".
