I have a user that uses some specialized software that does not allow you to
specify the default directory that you use for data files, they always start
to save to "My documents" and he has to navigate from there. He would like
to specify a different directory.

Is this do-able?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

You can change the buttons that appear on left of open/save dialog...To do this:
install Tweakui , go to Connon Dialogs > Places bar
Right side, choose custom and specify the paths...

It depends on the program! I mean there is no a registration key for
default directory for all applications at all!! The most simple way is
use Tweak UI from MS or Lightning Bar on http://lbar.leafpicker.com
(seems too powerful for u)
