Changing default "Add Fonts" folder

When I open the Fonts applet in Control Panel and click on File | Install
new font... the Add Fonts dialog box opens. In the lower left corner of this
dialog is the "Folders:" field where one needs to navigate to the folder
where your fonts are stored before installing them. The Folders field
defaults to C:\Windows, but no one stores all their font collection in the
Windows folder. To get to my storage folder I have to double click on c:,
double click on Documents and Settings, double click on my username, double
click on My Documents, and then navigate within My Documents to my storage
folder.

Is there a way to modify the Registry so the Folders field in the Add Fonts
dialog box opens to My Documents?

Thanks,
Gene

C:\WINDOWS\Fonts is the default folder for fonts.

And just to the right of that is >>>

Is there a check mark in the ??

Hi Wes,

I think you may have misunderstood my question. One of my clients is a font
developer. I have hundreds of fonts stored in sub-folders of My Documents.
These fonts are not installed in Windows, but are in development and
testing. When I want to install one or more of them for a few minutes I open
the Fonts applet in Control Panel and click on File | Install new fonts....
When the Add Fonts window opens the Folders field in the lower left corner
points to C: Windows (where nobody would store their font collection). It
takes a lot of clicks to navigate within this field to the proper sub-folder
of My Documents, just to install a couple of fonts. I want to tweak the
Registry so the Folders field in the Add Fonts window opens pointing to My
Documents. Can it be done?

Thanks,
Gene

Just drag the fonts in.

David,

When you drag fonts in they are not always recognized by every program (and
occasionally not by Windows) until a reboot. Also, installing them the
proper way allows a final check of font name settings and shows me what the
user is going to see when they install our fonts. There are QA reasons not
to drag them in.

Can the Registry setting that tells that window to default to c:\windows be
changed?

Thanks,
Gene

I went to sleep about 12 hours ago, then cat woke me up after 10 minutes and I was refreshed. The cats pulling out it's hair at the moment, on my bed, now he's looking at me funny as I type about him? Have to go give him a kiss. The cat sleeps with me in winter and sleeps outsides its owner's door in summer (which is why he sleeps with me, doesn't like the cold). He hasn't attacked yet this year, last year on one day I bled for hours (I think it's cute when he sinks his teeth and claws in, till I see the blood).

I stayed up late for the indy car race last night and the Formula 1 on sunday night. I was supposed to fix niece's computer on monday but they went out leaving me ringing every 1/2 hour all day instead of sleeping (it's wednesday now).

Install new font... the Add Fonts dialog box opens. In the lower left
corner of this dialog is the "Folders:" field where one needs to
navigate to the folder where your fonts are stored before installing
them. The Folders field defaults to C:\Windows, but no one stores all
their font collection in the Windows folder. To get to my storage
folder I have to double click on c:, double click on Documents and
Settings, double click on my username, double click on My Documents,
and then navigate within My Documents to my storage folder.

Is there a way to modify the Registry so the Folders field in the Add
Fonts dialog box opens to My Documents?

Thanks,

I sleep 3 - 8 hours 6 times a week (I skip a night to move my time to leave home at 5am). I then need to convert back to night sleep/day awake. I eat 7 times a week and always have - and I still get fat. I excercise about 20-30 hours a week (and still get fat). Since 8am I've been out twice, read 2 newspapers and one political journal, watched CSI, Stingers, The Sopranos between 8:30 pm and 11:30 pm, had a dispute with a hospital who sent me an email at 11am asking if I was going to attend a 10:30am appointment (first I had heard of it). Had to persuade them that I knew nothing about it.

But mainly I was waiting for my other sis to ring to see if I can get this virus laden, spyware laden OEM piece of crap off my schedule. She finally contacted me and said "I'll talk to you later". (My niece does a destructive restore when the spyware gets too much - so I install all this crap over and over again).

The last thing I said to my other sis, after asking her to type conf in Start Run (and she didn't) was "You are a waste of time". Have to be careful not to let computers seperate me from my last sibling.

So finally I went to sleep, and 10 minute later, MEOW, MEOW (the cat knows I'm writing about it) and if I don't respond it will run up and down my body till I do or sit 1 mm from my face and start howling.

Plus I wait online for my mum. My nephew has just been moved a long way from my mother (100s of Kms) just to spite her by the child's father who is suspect #1.

My dad is major depressed as his mum, only sibling, and daughter all died last year. The solicitor doing the will also died while doing it (who my dad had known for 50 years). He's also very ill. The cat is in attack mode now, just went for the mouse.

Any thing else you want to know?

David,

When you drag fonts in they are not always recognized by every program (and
occasionally not by Windows) until a reboot. Also, installing them the
proper way allows a final check of font name settings and shows me what the
user is going to see when they install our fonts. There are QA reasons not
to drag them in.

Can the Registry setting that tells that window to default to c:\windows be
changed?

Thanks,
Gene

The cats pulling out it's hair at the moment, on my bed, now he's looking at me funny as I type about him? Have to go give him a kiss. The cat sleeps with me in winter and sleeps outsides its owner's door in summer (which is why he sleeps with me, doesn't like the cold). He hasn't attacked yet this year, last year on one day I bled for hours (I think it's cute when he sinks his teeth and claws in, till I see the blood).

This font dialog comes from Win 3.1. It is also in longhorn. A senior MS programmer just asked someone complaining about it what feature in longhorn did they want removed to have a new dialog that almost NOONE uses anymore.

I went to sleep about 12 hours ago, then cat woke me up after 10 minutes and I was refreshed. The
cats pulling out it's hair at the moment, on my bed, now he's looking at me funny as I type about
him? Have to go give him a kiss. The cat sleeps with me in winter and sleeps outsides its owner's
door in summer (which is why he sleeps with me, doesn't like the cold). He hasn't attacked yet this
year, last year on one day I bled for hours (I think it's cute when he sinks his teeth and claws in,
till I see the blood).

I stayed up late for the indy car race last night and the Formula 1 on sunday night. I was supposed
to fix niece's computer on monday but they went out leaving me ringing every 1/2 hour all day
instead of sleeping (it's wednesday now).

Can the Registry setting that tells that window to default to c:\windows be
changed?

Thanks,
Gene

Thanks,
Gene

Gene;

C:\WINDOWS\Fonts is the default folder for fonts.

[[In the lower left corner of this
dialog is the "Folders:" field where one needs to navigate to the folder
where your fonts are stored before installing them.]]

And just to the right of that is >>>

Copy fonts to Fonts folder

Is there a check mark in the ??
===================

[[You can also drag OpenType, TrueType, Type 1, and raster fonts from
another location to add them to the Fonts folder. This works only if the
font is not already in the Fonts folder.]]

Hope this helps. Let us know.
Wes

In Gene <[email protected]> hunted and pecked:
When I open the Fonts applet in Control Panel and click on File |

Thanks,
Gene
