changing contents of a field

I need to undertake a check on a field content. If the
field is blank (ie no record exists) than the field can
be edited and the record added.

However, if the field has information stored in it, I
wish to open another form after the contents have changed
and ask for a reason as to why the entry is being
changed. also to store the old entry and the new entry
and the reason for the change in another table. I can do
most of this except that i dont know how to instigate it..

I try 'on change' and it wants to run my macro that
opens for defining the change every time i press a key in
the field. I cant see how 'after update can do it
either'.

help....

Use BeforeUpdate, and set its Cancel argument to True if the update
should not be permitted.
