Changing Compter Name

When using BindView to query identical Dell machines for
Service Tags, some records return with the Service Tag,
and others return with the Service Tag "not detected". Is
the Service Tag in the Windows registry? I cannot find it
by searching the registry. Is it in the registry, but
coded. If it is coded, where can I find it? If it is not
in the registry, where does BV find the Service Tag, and
why do some machines return it and others not?

NOTE: When a new machine is received from Dell, the
computer name is the Service Tag alphanumeric. Our Tech
Support group then changes the user name by going to My
Computer - Properties - Network Identification -
Properties.

I'm not sure what BV is, but it gets it from the SMBIOS (Systems Management
BIOS). If you install some Dell utilities (the IT Assistant thing,
perhaps), you will find that it gets stored in the registry.

You don't say what you want to change the computer name to, but I wrote
compname.exe to rename the computer to match the asset tag. It will also do
some other things.

It's at www.willowhayes.co.uk and it's freeware.

If you just want another tool to query the serial numbers, then use
"compname.exe /s".
