Changing AV, but what about firewall?

Windows XP sp2

Sick of Norton's AV eating resources, I'm about to switch to NOD32.

But what about the firewall that came with Nortons Internet Security?
Should I (can I) keep that or is there a better program suggestion?

I'm happy with ZoneAlarm/Avast combination. Avira maybe a little better
than Avast, but there's an annoying conflict with that and ZA (although
functionality is not affected). Both are free. Comodo have a combo which
is free (plus a backup program if you want it).
Personally, I never seem to get hit with either a virus or spam. I do
get persistent tracking cookie attacks although they don't seem to be
doing anything very harmful. I gave up on other cookies, some I need and
the rest I just live with having not found a way to avoid doing so.

Sygate is a really good firewall.

That's what I used for years, but Symantec bought them. Now, it's part
of thier Internet Security software (I guess). I loaded that, which
includes their AV stuff as well. I don't like the program because it
eats up my resources (among other problems).

So, now I'm wondering if it's advisable or possible to somehow leave
Norton's (Sygate) firewall and dump the rest, which will be replaced
with NOD32?

Comodo crashed one program, then another, and the third time
my machine could not load windows. Fortunately I had an
image backup and file backups to bring everything back - but
it took most of the day.

I don't understand it but I'm much to afraid to try again.

Which Kerio version are you using?

Today I bought Norton Antivirus 2007. I tried to install it but
it told me it was incompatible with ZoneAlarm. Okay. That
rules out installing it. So tomorrow I return it. And I'll
make a lot of noises at Best Buy if they won't take it back.

I looked and found that Avast was free for home use and have
installed it.

I PLAN NOW TO BE NORTON SYMANTEC FREE FOREVER!!!! AT HOME.
AT WORK. AT CONSULTING. AND ON LINE.

Save youself. Never, ever, even consider a Norton Symantac
product.

Does anyone have the person, Norton's email address? Please
send it to me if you do. He may have become a multimillionaire
by selling out to Symantic, but everything went to hell from
there!

Yea, but the Symantec Corporate version products are great and nothing
like the home user products.

peter norton was never involved in the creation of norton anti-virus...
why symantec choose the name of the guy who proclaimed computer viruses
to be urban legends like alligators in the sewers of new york to put on
their anti-virus product is beyond me... somehow they still made it work
for them though...

A combination I would recommend is AOL AVS and free version of Kerio
firewall. AVS is basically the free version of Kaspersky AV (the best,
IMHO) and Kerio gives you much more control over applications & packets
than other free versions. I use this combo and they have worked well
together without any problems. I would suggest a pre-Sunbelt version of
Kerio (preferably 4.2.2) available from Filehippo.com.

In the case of their AVS product, though, I've been keeping my eye
out for for "treacheries" that might be discovered by experts for
a long time now, and coming up empty. I highly recommed AVS to
those looking for a top notch free av. I use it on two computers
and I like it far more than any other free av, partly because of
its flexibility and range of options. It has little impact on PCs
having, say, at least 256 meg RAM and 1.6 ghz cpus.

Agreed. As far as the regular AOL software itself, it won't even be
allowed to come close to my computer. In fact, if this was simply AOL AV,
I wouldn't even look at it. However, since it is Kaspersky standing behind
the product, I doubt Kaspersky would allow AOL to drag its name in the mud.
Of course, there is a toolbar that is optional when you install the AV, but
not mandatory. There is also the registration requirement, but I have had
AVS installed for quite a while and have not received any emails or
advertising from AOL. At the same time, if it ever even looks like there
is something amiss, AVS will be quickly removed.
