Changing a sound card

I'm replacing my existing sound card with something
considerably more sexy. How do I do it? Do I just turn off
the computer, pull out the old card, stick in the new one,
and turn on the computer? Or do I have to uninstall the old
card (a SoundMax) first from the Control Panel? Or what?

Help, please...
 
The sound card should come with complete directions. You can also find
complete directions on the web site of the sound card manufacturer.

No problems there. I'm pretty sure I can install the new
one. The question is what to do about the old one. Do I just
rip it out:? Or uninstall it from the Control Panel? Or
what?

You don't have to "rip it out", Bob. Just remove it more-or-less gently. But
remove it. And if there's any software program(s) listed for that old
soundcard in your Add or Remove Programs, just remove it.

Here is what I do:

1) in Control Panel ---> Add/Remove programs ---> Remove all software for
the sound card.
2) in Device Manager ---> Uninstall the drivers.
3) Power down your XP.
4) Carefully remove the old card (disable the sound card option in BIOS, if
the sound card is part of the motherboard).
5) Install the new sound card (note: insert in to the slot as far away
from your AGP video as possible.)
6) Start up XP and install the drivers when requested

This is to clean up un-used drivers.

Not really.

Just have the new cd handy when it calls for drivers for the new card.

The latter advice is *absolutely* wrong. By all means, remove your old sound
card. Not doing so has the potential for creating all kinds of problems in
the future. There is simply *no* advantage in retaining your old sound card
in your computer.

probably delete the drivers in Device Manager, power down, then pull out the
old card, install the new card, power up and let windows install the
drivers, and when prompted put the supplied drivers disk in for it to load
drivers from. Once the card is up and working, update the drivers from the
manufacturer's web site.
