Changing _ to italics

I've downloaded some books in ascii format from the Project Gutenberg
website. I've read them into Word (I'm currently using Word 2000, but have
access to Word 2007). My plan is to reformat the text to make it pretty and
then use Microsoft's Word add-in to translate the books into Microsoft Reader
format. (This means I have a multitude of free books to read on my PDA --
cool, huh?)

Only problem I'm having is that the ASCII books use the _phrase that should
be in italics_ convention. Autocorrect won't translate this usage to real
formatting. Any suggestions on how I can streamline this process?

TIA

While that will certainly work, the brackets around the underscores are
superfluous
_(*)_
would work as well - replace with
\1

AutoFormat should do this if the appropriate option is enabled. You need to
explicitly run AutoFormat over the text.
