Per a previous post, I got the following information from the knowledge base
article 307856:

Change the Windows Explorer Default Startup Folder
To change the default startup folder for Windows Explorer:
1. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, and then
right-click Windows Explorer.
2. On the menu that appears, click Properties.
3. In the Target box, append the "/root" command-line switch to the
"%SystemRoot%\Explorer.exe" command, using the startup location that you
want. For example, if you want Windows Explorer to start at the root of
drive C, edit the command to the following:
%SystemRoot%\Explorer.exe /root, C:\
4. Click OK.

Okay, I tried this, as carefully as possible, substituting the letter F for
the letter C, and most of my data are on the F:\ drive. The result lost
every custom setting, all my email, my enrollment in email, all my
favorites, and God knows what else. It frightened me to death, and I did a
system restore which did not remedy that, so I unrestored and restored to an
earlier point.
I realize fully that it might be a real fool's errand to ask, What did I do
wrong, and I am torn between the desire to try again and the fear of trying
again. Can any advice be offered?
