Changes to Normal.dot

Nothing I have read in replies to the question about the Normal.dot asking for changes to be saved seems to apply to me.
I have no add-ins, COM or otherwise. I am on Word 97 on a laptop that has Windows XP loaded and work on a networked server. This same problem affects many of my colleagues. The problem happens completely randomly and results in untold numbers of unnecessary blank documents being created as we use mailmerge widely
Any other suggestions

Do you use Word as your email editor? ISTR that this is also implicated.
