I'm using Outlook 2003. When I make changes to email display as field, some
take and some change back to default Full Name (email address). I'm only
using one computer and not syncing with any PDA's or any other devices.

Try clearing any autocompletion entries you have for those Contacts who
refuse to change.

Don't have any. The one that I'm experimenting with is a new contact. I've
never typed in her email address so there is no autocomplete...

Well, SNAP! Yes I am Syncing, but I still don't know what's changing it.
I'm using Outlook Connector and syncing with the address book on MSN, but
there's no "display as" field on those records. If I make changes in
Outlook, as soon as I send/receive, they change back to default, but I have
plenty of contact records that do hold the change. I have no idea where the
change is coming from.

I was asking the steps you are using for creating the Contacts then changing
the Display As field, what happens when you tab out of the field, and at
what point exactly the email display as field changes.

I've tried lots of different ways. On the contact record, delete just the
email address, leave the name, hit enter. Delete the whole field and retype,
click save and close. From list view double click "email display as" field,
change and hit enter. In that instance, I changed three or four records and
watched as they changed back during the send receive.

So when you hit "Save and Close" the changes persist until you do an email
poll?
Is this an HTTP account or a standard mail account?

Inexplicable. I still suspect you are using an email account type not fully

I am having a similar problem. I have Vista running Outlook 2007 using beta
2 of the new Outlook Connector. I am syncing with a MSN premium account.
The problem is that if you modify the "Display As" field in Outlook, the
change is lost as soon as you sync with the server (using Outlook Connector).
If you don't sync to the server, the modification persists perfectly fine in
Outlook (even if you close the contact or, in fact, close the application
completely).

A separate problem is that Outlook contacts fields (e.g. Spouse or Children
fields) are not propogated from the desktop to the server even though it
seems that Windows Live Mail now has those fields (try doing a complete
export to CSV of your Windows Live Mail contacts using a web browser and
you'll see that these fields exist even though there is no web-based UI for
editing/viewing them). Ideally, the fields would be propogated between
desktop and server regardless of whether the web-based UI can view them.

Thanks!

some

I also have simular problem.

Let's say I create a new contact on Outlook. And set the name as "Joe Doe",
e-mail address "(e-mail address removed)". Then, outlook automatically create
"Display as" field like "Joe Doe ([email protected])".

Next, change the "Display as" field to "Joe D". save and close the field.
Immediately after close the contact, if I open the contact, I can confirm the
"Display as" field is still kept as "Joe D". But after Outlook connector syncs
with Office Live, The filed is changd as "Joe Doe ([email protected])".

That mean, Outlook or Outlook Connector reset my modificaiont. This problem
happens only on OST file. Not on PST at all. I am using Outlook almost 10
years and changing "Display as" field very frequently, but this is first
time I
saw this problem.

- Windows Vista Home Premium (Japanese ver)
- Outlook 2003 (Jp ver 11.8118.8132 SP2)
- Outlook Connector (Jp ver 12.0.4518.1063)
- Office Live Essential

Explain why this is a problem and why you think you need to change the email
display as field. This all looks like behavior as designed to me.

I need to change the email display because it does't fit Japanse name.
The "File as" filed can chose the format of contact name, to fit our calture,
and "Display as" filed follow that setting. But Outlook connector (or
office live ) override what I set. Modification by neither "File as" nor
"Display as" work well. The "Dipslay as" is always overwritten.

Again, this modification works very whell until I introduce the outlook
connector. But only the contact list which works with Outlook connector
have this problem.

Are there anybody know how to fix it? I applied SP3 for outlook 2003,
but still problem is existing.

There is no way to change how Outlook handles the Email Display As name.
That option is not provided because it really does not affect what
recipients see. You can change each one manually, but operations like using
Office Live may reset it to Outlook's convention.

Some of the people in our office are trying to eliminate this due to large contact lists.

there has to be a file or something that tells the "display as" field to populate information from the name and email address fields. where or how do we change that file?

I have a client who has moved up to Outlook 2k3 from Outlook Express on a Windows Millenium OS.
I managed to get the address book to import all her contacts, but they display the EMAIL DISPLAY AS as just the email address. The problem for her is that she PRINTS all their email. They file them under the senders name... but the email does not always display the senders name nor their company. i.e (e-mail address removed)

She has many hundreds of contacts. Could you confirm if there is a default setting I could change to suit? N.B. they are running Pop3 accounts (no Exchange server)
