I created a user acct "hardtotype", which worked fine,
used it for several weeks, then decided to change the user
name (via control panel/users) to simplify logon
to "short". Everything worked fine till I noticed that the
folder under docs/setings (for user folders) still was
named "hardtotype", so I renamed it to "short" as well.
Now when I log on with either username it creates a new
user (default settings). How do I fix the "broken link"
that associates the logon name with the folder with same
name? I need some docs from my "hardtotype" user, most of
all my Outlook mails. Can I copy user profile to a newly
created profile "new-short"? will that migrate the docs as
well?

any help is appreciated, thanx

System properties > User Profiles holds your answer
Just copy the profile into your short account But you need to do it logged
in as another admin account

Hi Canon,

If this is your personal home computer, and it is a standalone (workgroup)...

"Fix the "broken link" that associates the logon name with the folder with same
name" by performing the steps in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base Article:

KB314045 - HOW TO Restore a User Profile in Windows 2000
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=314045

"To copy a user profile" search Windows 2000 Help for words in double-quotes and
follow all the step. This will copy everything stored in the Documents and Setting
Folder (except maybe your Temporary Internet Files index.dat) and give "short" the
permissions necessary. Before deleting "hardtotype", verify that "short" contains
all the Document and Settings files (docs, Outlook mails, etc.).

If your computer is a member of a domain, please speak to your Administrator.

And if you have never edited the registry, you may want to read this Windows Registry
Tutorial:

Windows Registry Guide - Windows Registry FAQ
