I removed the Everyone group for full control at the C:
drive. I then added a group with full control at the C:
drive. Now the computer boots to the point where it would
have done Autocheck and then it dumps a memory dump in the
black screen of death.

why does w2k crash out when the ntfs security is changed?
this is the third w2k computer to do so!!!

The error you're bugchecking with should be a clue.
My wild guess: "nt authority\system" is not included in the group you
replaced everyone with. It tried to access something and failed,
bugchecked.

You should be able to recover with the CD, or possibly a parallel install of
the OS.

NB: System is treated as a member of the administrators group. If you give
administrators full control, you should be ok.
