Changed associations not 'taking'

I have tried to change the associations for several image file types
to open in a particular viewer I like better than the one that comes
with XP. The change appears correctly in the open dialog under
advanced settings and works with .bmp, .tif. and .gif, but it does not
work with .jpg. Now when I double-click on a .jpg file, it opens in
Microsoft Photo Editor from Office XP instead of in either the
original viewer or my new viewer. I have checked every association
(open, edit, print, etc.) under this extension and photo editor
appears in none of them. (My new viewer shows in exactly the same way
it does for those extensions for which it works.) Does anyone have
any idea what's going on here and how I can get this association
fixed? I'm comfortable working in the registry is that's necessary,
but I don't know where to look for such things. Also, I'd prefer not
to remove photo editor because it's the only program I have that will
quickly open Kodak's old Photo CD format for seeing what's in one of
those files (but I would as a last resort). Thanks!!!

Hi RRA,

Thank you for posting!

Let us try the below steps:
1. Open Windows Explorer
2. Locate the JPG file you want to open
3. Right click the file
4. Choose "Open With..." from the context menu
5. It will open Open With dialog box
6. Highlight the program you want to use
7. Mark the option "Always use the selected program to open this kind of
file"
8. Click OK button

I will it will let you to open JPG files with the program you prefered
bydefault.

Have a nice day!

Thanks & Regards,

To prevent Image and Fax Viewer From stealing associations

Go to Start/Run/Regedit and Delete this string:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\image\ShellEx\ContextMenuHandlers\ShellImagePreview
@="{e84fda7c-1d6a-45f6-b725-cb260c236066}"

Manually Edit: Right Click On image file. Choose Open With, then Choose
Program. Select your favorite image viewer program. Check the "always use
selected program" box Click OK.

To view an image using Picture and Fax Viewer and Edit using other software:

Go to Windows Explorer/Tools/Folder Options/File Types. Select an image
type (jpg). Click on Advanced then New. Name for Action type in: &Edit.
Under Application used to perform action: Browse to the
application/software. Set it as default. Ok your way out.
