Change XP Home to XP Pro on New Toshiba Model A65

My school laptop classes require XP Pro. My new Toshiba came loaded with XP
Home. The computer group tried to load XP Pro and it would not allow it.

What can we do ?

Thanks,

How did they try to install XP Pro, it should install as an
upgrade just fine, but you'll need to have a retail XP Pro
CD. If they tried to use an OEM CD, they won't do an
upgrade.

You might consider returning the computer for exchange for a
model with XP Pro installed.

*SIGH* Why do people assume we're psychic/clairvoyant?! What does "it would
not allow it" mean? What errors are you receiving?

Incidentally, you should have ordered the notebook with Pro. Changing the OS
will invalidate the warranty. After all, you knew what you needed it for.

Please provide more details.

We tried to make the exchange but were to late. 14 day return/exchange policy.
I would expect the school is using a OEM CD.

There was no mention of XP Pro in the specs when I first looked into the
laptop class program. We purchased the new Toshiba with XP Home and found
out after the 14 days that we had this issue.

I am in a bind.

Thanks for your input.

You should see if your school offer academic licenses and purchase an
upgrade CD to WinXP PRO. I would also contact Toshiba support and see if
there are any issues they are aware of in migrating your OS to PRO. You
should also be aware that in many cases, altering the OS will void your
manufacturer warranty. You need XP Pro because you will need the ability to
join a domain (become part of the school's network), and XP Home only allows
you to join a workgroup, not a domain.

There should be no reason why your computer cannot be upgraded. As others
pointed out, you gave so little information as to why it "could not be
upgraded" that I doubt you'll get any constructive assistance.

Worst case scenario is that you will have to purchase a WinXP Pro disc at
retail. I would recommend, to prevent future headaches, that if you do
purchase a Pro disc, get the full version and not the upgrade. If you get
the upgrade and have to format and install in the future, your "restore
partition" or Restore CD will not qualify as a previous OS for the Pro
Upgrade to work.

Ok What you want to do is reformat the Hard Drive then
reinstall Windows XP Pro, I use OEM on all of my
computers so it should work on yours too, simpl as that

As I said, the OEM CDs will not do an upgrade, you can
either format the hard drive and do a clean install or
probably easier, just buy an upgrade Windows XP CD from the
school bookstore, should cost about $100 or less that way.
About $200 at BestBuy I think.

As another said, You'll lose you support from Toshiba.
