I have used some styles through a long document and realise they don't
decribe what they are anymore

How do I rename an existing style which is in use?

TIA/gary

Use Ctrl+Shift+S to display the Apply Styles dialog, select the style from
the pulldown list and then click on the Modify Button.

To add to what Doug has said, note that you can only rename custom styles. If
you try to rename a built-in style, Word creates a style name alias instead.
