How can you change the default user profile to a
different name than the name you originally set the
computer without reinstalling? I tried changing the user
name and even loggin in as a new and different "admin"
user and changing the folder name in documents and
settings. Still nothing. Found directions from Microsoft
on going to Computer Management and System tools, but
that only works in XP Professional. And you can't change
the profile name the old fashion way under system. Any
other suggestions?! And don't say the obvious (upgrade to
XP or reinstall). There's gotta be another way...

Not sure exactly what you are trying to do, but the "Default User" folder is
the template XP uses whenever you create a new user account. You shouldn't
need to change the name of that folder, just make a new user.

Are you asking about why the folder name associated with an account doesn't
change when you change the account's name? If so, I don't know why, but I
do know that it just won't happen.

The work around is to
create a third, temporary account

logoff OldName account and logon to Temp account,

Create a NewName account

Copy OldName account to NewName account

Logoff Temp and logon to NewName and verify everything is working

Delete OldName

I think that's it. If there's a better way I haven't heard of it yet
