Change the default for new programs

I have two hard drives and whenver we load a program it defaults to the C:
drive and we have to change the C to D. Not a big deal. However, It would
be nice to change that so it starts out in the D drive.

Anyone know how to set this?

That will depend on the program

In MS Word (the version I use is 97, later versions may be different)

Click TOOLS at the top
Click OPTIONS in the pop-up
Click FILE LOCATIONS in the next pop-up
Set file startup locations as needed

Again... this is a GENERAL process... your program may vary

In the registry at:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion

Change the value data C: to D: at these value names:

ProgramFilesDir, CommonFilesDir

When Windows was designed, the Microsoft programmers did
not know that anything existed beyond Drive C. To install
programs into other partitions, it would be necessary to
do a custom installation...to break the default. Most, but
not necessarily all program setups, will allow the user to
exercise this option.
 
I do not dabble in changing the default for programmes. But what I do I
download executive file in the the partition other than c and in a new
downoad folder. when I click the exe file to instal sometime it is possible
to change the programme file folder. even if it is not and the program is
loaded in partition C. it does not matter. If something goes wrong in C I
can always use exe file in the other partition and once agan instal the
programme.

This is new users solution.
 
So when installing a new program it's okay to install on a secondary drive?
I always thought such files had to be installed on the C drive to work with
Windows... you learn something new everyday :-)

Programs can be installed on any drive but a removable one.
 
To keep things tidy, create a Program Files folder on the second drive, and
install to there :)

But there is one "problem" with that. It won't get a delete protection
like the original one. Just try open properties, you can't edit the name
of the folder. That must mean that you can't delete it ;):P
(I've never tried deleting it!, that would be too risky ;))
