I have two machines running xp. On the one computer, the text under the
icons on the desktop has a little bit of a shadow beneath it, otherwise the
background is visible. On the other computer, the text under the icon on
the desktop is in it's own grey box, with white text. Is there a way of
changing the grey box that the text is in to clear, like the first machine??
I've looked through the settings on both machines for almost an hour, and
can't seem to find how to change this.

System Properties> Advanced> Performance> Visual Effect.
Check box to display drop shadows for desktop icons.

Also, right click desktop and under Arrange Icons, uncheck "Lock Web items
on desktop."

Right click a blank spot on the desktop.
Choos Properties.
On the Appearance tab click Effects.
Under Effects:
I have chosen; fade effect, clear type, and all boxes are checked except use
large icons. I still have a gray box around the icon text. Any other
ideas?

Under Visual Effects, all the boxes are checked. I unchecked them all,
applied, then re-checked them again, thinking this might reset something.
The only thing that changed was that the windows theme reverted to the
default blue colour, and the icon text background is now blue instead of
gray. Lock Web items on the desktop is also checked. Any other ideas?
This has really puzzled me as both my systems appear to have the same
settings.

Henry, you want Lock Web items to be *not* checked.
While there are plenty of nice options in System> Performance> Visual
Effect, the second one from the bottom "Use drop shadows for icon label..."
seems to be the key choice that needs to be enabled to get rid of the holes
in the wallpaper.

NOTE: Also check that you are using 32 bit color in Display> Settings
(although this should work with 24 bit as well).

No, sorry.

Oh Sharon, that was the ticket. Thank you so much for your help. I'll be
able to sleep tonight without that nagging at the back of my mind :)

You MVP's are the best,

No, sorry.

Thanks a bunch Frank. Sharon found the problem when she suggest I uncheck,
"Lock Web Items on Desktop"
Your time was greatly appreciated,

Henry
