I have a Win2000 Server SP3 that is a domain controller.
I want to change its computer name.
The properties button in the Network identification tab
is disabled.
How can I do this?
Also, would changing the name will effect any thing on
system.

Thanks.

AFAIK, you'd need to demote it to a plain ole server first.

What's the reason you want to change the name?

thanks for replying.
what is AFAIK?
Actally all our other servers have a naming convention
and we want to set its name based on that.
Please give some instructions.(any document which
explains)
Thanks.

You never mentioned if any other DC is available on domain. Renaming the DC
is not the problem. Thats easily done. Not loosing the domain's database is
another story.

If you demote your only remaining DC, you essentially zap the domain. If you
demote one of several DCs, you can disjoint, rename, rejoin + promote. Along
with careful modification of the DNS entries pertaining to old DC and some
NTDSUtil verifications.
