Hello!

I am running Windows XP on one of my office computers. After I print a
document to the fax software for sending, is there anyway I can change to
"to" number? Some of the calls are local and some are not. It would help a
lot if I can figure out how I can send it without the long distance code
first, and then try it with the 1 + area code.

You need to store fax numbers in Canonical (International) format for
dialing rules to work:

You Must Enter Telephone Numbers in Canonical Form in Order to Use Dialing

Hello Hal! Thank you for responding!

First of all we are in the US and have never had to (nor will we have to in
the foreseeable future) make international calls to send a fax. (But I'm
keeping an open mind...)

Some of the calls we make from our office do not require us to dial +1 (area
code). They need only the seven digit telephone number. In fact, if we dial
+1 (area code) then the seven digit number, long distance charges apply.

What we have been doing to get around this is to first try to send the fax
as a local call. If the operator tells us it's long distance, we resend it
as a long distance call. It would be so much easier if we could change the
send number from the fax console rather than having to delete the original
fax and re-print it, entering the subject line, message, etc when we resend
it.

On the dialing rules, we may be able to get a list of local call perfixes
from our phone company. Will dialing rules allow me to program certain
prefixes as local calls, and the rest as long distance?

Thank you again for your help!
Nathan

That's what dialing rules are for and yes, you can use them to designate
which prefixes are local and which require 1+area code. The one thing they
require is that all phone numbers be entered in Canonical format; the rules
won't run if the numbers are in the wrong format.
