change read only file

im new to xp. at my photo studio (using win2000)we transfer cd-r's between locations, put them from cd to hard drive, right click the file/folder, hit properties and unselect the read only box, apply, no big deal...open photoshop, tweak, save and done. im taking stuff home and try the same thing, and when im done i go back to properties...read only is still selected.
what do i need to do to make these not "read only" anymore in xp
 
You can change the file attrib but not the folder and this is by design.
