I have a laptop with a 17 inch display,for use at home I have a 20 inch
display,I like to work with an extended desktop but can I switch the 20 inch
to prime and the laptop display to second

That depends on the capabilities of your video driver and its utilities. My Toshiba
has no problem doing that. I use a 22" as primary and the 17" in lapie as secondary.
I also have a matrox device to hook up so I can use my 22" a 19" and the 17" all
at the same time.

Richard I have been doing exactly that for a few months now. The Intel 945 Chipset
allows me to select either monitor as primary and I can use each independently or
spread my desktop across both.

In general, no. Unless you can swap the cables on your display adapter,
it's pretty much hard-wired to use one port as the primary and the other as
the secondary.
