Hi All. Does anyone know of a tool that Win9x client can use to change their
passwords in AD? We have looked at an ASP script from MSDN, but cannot get
it to work. Command line tools we had from NT no longer work obviously, so
any ideas?

TIA - Jason

Jason,

I am really not trying to sound like a smarta$$ with the
reply, honest!

Have you tried Active Directory Users and Computers? You
can simply right click the user account, select "Reset
Password" and there you go!

Naturally, this would be your job ( via ADUC ). If you
want your users to be able to do this then I do not know
of a tool. However, there is a "work around" that I know
of.

You can use scripting to do this. If you go to
http://www.rlmueller.net there, in the Free VBScript Code
section, is an User Administration section and one of the
many sample scripts is "Can change password".

Sorry, maybe I was not clear enough - Note "tool that Win9x client use to
change their passwords ..." I need for the user to be able to change their
password from a Win9x box. Obviously you cannot use the AD tools, let alone
I am not going to create consoles for delegating those appropriate objects
to standard users. The password reset from DOS using Net Commands from
before, cause a corrupt password in our environment.

Thank you for the link and I will check this out....

Opps! He says, wiping the egg from his face!

Sorry about that. I am not familiar with any tool that
will allow users to change their password when logged
into WIN9x systems. Naturally, if you had any WINNT /
WIN2000 / WINXP clients you could allow the users to log
on to that machine and do the reliable "ctrl-alt-del". I
know, not really sexy and somewhat cumbersome but it
could work in a pinch! Unless, of cource, we are talking
about hundreds of users!

Hey, but let's think about this for a second. If you use
Exchange 2000 and you allow OWA to be used ( sure that it
works both internally and externally ) over https:// then
the "change password" option is available.

I know that it is not sexy and a "direct" solution but
*might* be something to consider in a pinch.

HTH,

Interesting thought Cary. I will look into that as well. We are in a school
setting with about 12,000 users so the HTML/ASP option is always nice...

Will do.

One thing I will add is that we have all Win and Wimp workstations and 2003
Server AD backend. The Wimp PC's are fine when changing the passwords. The
goal is to find a tool for Win clients to successfully change passwords in
AD (while in a session and not at logon). It would be nice to post a web
page centrally on the main Website and user could then change password.

Standby soon for my post...

Sorry...Spell Check got out of hand..I was referring to Windows 98 and
Windows XP.
