How do I have a page number change in the text of a paragraph automatically,
based on the content.

Example, I am refering the user to a diagram, however, I want to say, please
see page ___ for illustration. Can you insert a code where the page number
goes, that will automatically update if the image changes to a different page
number
 
Bookmark the diagram and then insert a cross-reference to the page number for
the bookmark.
 
And if you're using numbered figure captions (inserted with Insert
Caption), you don't even need to make your own bookmark -- you do the
cross reference by Insert > Reference (or, in Word2007, on the
Reference tab of the Ribbon). You can reference the figure number, or
the page it's on, or the whole caption, ...
 
Good point. (I got the impression that the OP was referring to unnumbered
figures, but I could be wrong, of course.)
