Ramesh,
I use Outlook Exprees as my newsreader, and I think I have it set up as per
the microsoft instructions above.

One question:
Many people have their email address supressed (or they use a dummy one).

How do I do this ?

I'm not Ramesh, but just go to Tools | Accounts, double-click. your news
account, and on the General tab, put any address you want in the E-mail
address field. I have (e-mail address removed) as mine.

I had experimented unsuccessfully with this in the past and I had two
addresses set up here

Email Address: my true address
Reply Address: a dummy one

I have now swapped them and I will send this to see what happens when I read
it.

Trevor,

Adding to what Ken said:

See item #6 in this page:
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/outlookexpressnewreader.htm

Type your email address, this can be any email address, but I suggest
creating an anonymous email account just for newsgroup posting.

(As a further warning, never use your real email address in the
configuration of your newsgroup reader or your signature. Alter the address
with something obvious to someone with a legitimate reason to reply, but so
you will not have your email address harvested by spam harvesters. Use a
prefix/suffix like no spam or bogus, etc. Change the part of the email
address after the @ sign. This will lessen the possibility email will be
sent to a real person.)

Anonymous email accounts are available for free. Hushmail Secure Email is
one of many examples available. For more examples do a Google search for
"anonymous email"

I hate those third-party forums which simply leech the newgroup postings and
display these posts in their forums. They would probably be earning good $$$
as well through sponsored Ads.

You're welcome. Glad to help.

I would use a fake address in *both* places. What you've done still allows
spambots to garner your real address. If you want the recipient to be able
to send you personal E-mail, add text instructions for what to change in
your signature. For example

Trevor
(e-mail address removed)
(to send E-mail, remove the numbers from my address)

Thanks again, Ken

I wondered about what each address is used for (I still do)

I have seen a few addresses like you mention
eg trevor1234(remove1234)@mydomain.com
and I assume that this foils the spam engines

Now I know that I should put dummies in both places, I can think about doing
this.

But maybe I don't need to as my signature contains my website address, and
there is a link in this for people to reply to my email address.
Hopefully I have spam-proofed this link by placing the email call in JS like
this:
document.write
( '<a href="mailto:'
+ userTo + '@' + domainTo
+ '?subject=' + subject
+ '&cc=' + CC
+ '&bcc=' + BCC
+ '&body=' + body + '">'
+ '<img src="images/display/mailto.gif">' + text + '</a>')
}
where userTo and domainTo contain parts of the email address.
(The other variables are also set to defaults)
