It appears that whenever hard disk (C-main drive) is formatted, WinXP Pro
creates a new computer name.
How about resizing C-partition? I assume that resizing the C-partition
also triggers a new computer name.
Is that correct? Roman

Your assumption is illogical:
Windows XP does not have the ability to non-destructively resize
partitions from within Windows.
The only *native* method to re-size the partition upon which Windows
resides is from the command prompt and must be followed by a format and a
fresh install of Windows, thus generating a new computer name.

I always resize C-partition with Partition Magic program. But I did not
check whether the resizing forces to change the name of the computer or not.
BTW, I like to have about 35GB size as C-partition. If it is too big (i.e.,
the original size of hard disk like 120 gb or 180 gb), it takes a long time
to complete checkdisk or defrag. Am I missing something here?

The computer name has nothing to do with the volume name. The volume
name is what you see when you look at the drive descriptions in My
Computer. To see the computer name, go to the System applet in Control
Panel and look on the Computer Name tab. You can change the computer
name there.
