Hi,

I'm planning to upgrade my processor and motherboard from an Intel 2.4 gig
to an AMD64 bit processor. Please can someone advise me on what needs to be
done to XP for upgrade the OS with the correct drivers etc when the new board
has been put in place.

Thanks in advance.

Steve.

For a CPU brand change along with chipset change and without
everything else remaining the same, I would still do a clean
install versus a repair job.

Correction --- that is: ...with everything else remaining the
same.

The short version: a repair install is the minimum. Some would recommend a
clean XP installation.

In my opinion, the clean install isn't a bad idea, but it's a lot more work
than a repair install.

If you decide to go for the clean install, the "files and settings transfer
wizard" can make it somewhat less painful, but you'd still have to
re-install every application.

On the other hand, the repair installation will preserve most installed
applications and settings. Everything installed through Windows Update would
be lost, though.
