I have a new laptop computer and have gifted my old sony vaio to my wife
[thats the sort of guy I am].

My name appears as the registered user of the Vaio. Is there some way
that I can change this to the name of my wife without reformatting
everything?

Many thanks

registered owner/company

Have her also make a new user account in her own name and delete yours
if she likes.

However, to fix the "Registered to" information for WinNT/2K/XP,
you can use Start > Run > Regedit.exe to edit:

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current Version\RegisteredOwner

and:

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current
Version\RegisteredOrganization

How this will affect the name displayed in previously installed
applications will vary depending upon each individual program; some read
the registered owner information dynamically, while others read it only
during installation.

No, sorry. That will not changed the registered user and will not change
the user account (except for the name shown on the Welcome Screen). Read
the other replies to get the answer.
