We purchased a new computer to do one function for our company. We use Automate software on this machine to turn it off and on, but the Automate program can not get passed the unlock machine function. Therefore, we have decided the best thing to do is reformat and install Win 98. Are there any special problems that we may run into? The processor is a Celeron. Thank you in advance

Ouch! Hope you have a BIG bottle of Tylenol handy. You
will need it. Here is the situation. You have a modern
day computer that wasn't even around when Windows 98 was
created. It's going to have video cards, network cards,
etc that Windows 98 will not recognize because the drivers
didn't exist in 98s days. If you must do this dirty deed,
go in to you system properties on XP and write down all
the hardware that your system has (type of video card,
network card, sound card, etc). Go to the web sites of
each of these cards and see if you can find 98 drivers.
You can make this computer 98 compatible but it's going to
be quite a headache. Make sure you also go to the
Windows Update website and download all the available
patches and service packs that are available for windows
98 as well; 98 had a hard time with usb functioning
properly so if any of your hardware (mouse, keyboard) are
usb, get a regular mouse, and keyboard connected before
you even attempt the install, 98 will not immediately
recognize them. Good luck!

Not to mention the fact it will void the warranty! Many manufacturers have
decided to follow MS's lead and no longer support 98.

When you say it can't get pat the "unlock machine function" are your
referring to the Windows XP logon screen? If so you can set your system to
bypass that log on screen and boot directly into Windows. As for installing
Windows 98 you should go with Windows 98 Second Edition. You may have to
download Windows 98 drivers for some of the hardware but it shouldn't pose
too much of a problem for you.
