change keys and values at registry editor

i have edited by mistake to open dat files with a program
not suitable and now i can not change it. i have windows
xp could you please tell me what to do?

From Windows Explorer
click 'Tools' menu
click 'Folder Options...'
click 'File Types' tab
Scroll down to find 'dat' in left-column and wrong program in right-column
highlight said, click 'Delete' button
 
Try deleting the program which you use to assign the dat
file to. Then attempt to reopen the dat file after the
program has been deleted. The dat file should ask you
what program you wish to open with. Select another
program.
